News from our friends at PennAEYC: The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed a two-year budget deal, which was signed by President Trump on February 9, 2018. This means the continuing resolution process and government shutdowns are over.

The spending plan would double the investment in the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG)!

The deal includes the following:

  • $2.9 billion for CCDBG each year for two years. #DoubleCCDBG!!
  • Extended funding for CHIP for 10 years (instead of the previously agreed-to six years)
  • Extended the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program for 5 years
  • An additional $4 billion for higher education over two years
  • $6 billion for opioid and mental health treatment
  • $7 billion for community health centers
  • $80 billion in disaster relief
  • $20 billion for infrastructure

Today we can celebrate BUT there is still work to be done!

First, Federal: Appropriations Committee still needs to write the bill that will make sure the money goes where it is supposed to go. Keep an eye out for opportunities to advocate in the future to ensure the CCDBG investments are realized!

Second, State: The state budget process has just started with the next step being House and Senate Appropriations Committee hearings where legislators gather information from cabinet officials about the budget proposal. Contact PennAEYC to help as the state process continues to can make sure the Governor’s proposed increases for child care, pre-k and home visiting are in the final budget!
