Learn More. >The Pennsylvania Department of Health has issued a reminder about how backyard birds can share their germs. Adult chickens, baby chicks, and other birds may carry Salmonella, E. coli, or bird flu. Touching poultry, their eggs, or items in their coop and then touching your face or mouth can spread germs that may make you sick. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after spending time near poultry, and closely supervise children around backyard flocks. If you feel sick after being around poultry, call 1-877-PA-HEALTH. Print the flyer in English or Spanish.
