Teaching Pyramid Infant Toddler Observation Scale (TPITOS™)

What is TPITOS?

The TPITOS is a program observation instrument that, when used in a center-based setting, provides a snapshot of adult behaviors/environmental arrangements that support the social-emotional development of infants and toddlers. The observation is at least two hours.

Observations of at least three children need to include a minimum of three of the following activities:

  • Free play
  • Structured group activities
  • Personal care
  • Outdoor activity

Which program(s) could use TPITOS?

TPITOS is appropriate for use in centerbased programs serving infants and toddlers.

How does TPITOS support Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)?

Information gathered during an observation using the TPITOS instrument can be used by the program to help identify strengths in interactions and environmental arrangements to support positive behavior, as well as areas for growth in practices that support children’s positive behavior in the classroom. It can also be used to help create the program’s continuous quality improvement plan.

TPITOS Assessment Process

External TPITOS assessments are conducted by a reliable TPITOS assessor from the Program Quality Assessment (PQA) team.

Internal TPITOS assessments are conducted by the program’s internal assessment (IA) team. The program’s IA team partners with the Quality Coach and TPITOS Assessor when planning for and conducting internal assessment and when analyzing the information collected during the internal assessment process. Please see How to Conduct an Internal Assessment Using the TPITOS for detailed information on using TPITOS for internal assessment.
